چکیده

Sum,itmary. Barley embryos, completely free from endospernm, wvere excised from germinating grain at various times and al'lowed to diffuse into an aqueous medium for varying lengths of time. At the end of this time, the embrvos and ambient solutioins were separately extracted. Gibberellin-like activity in the extracts was determined with the barley endosperm bioassay using seed from the same varietv, hiarvest and treatment schedule as was employed for the emibryo diffusion experiments. Gibberellin-like sutbstances were released by embryos thTroughout the 60 hour germination period, though at no time during this period could sufficient activity be extracted from the embryos themiiselves to account for the observed release. Solvent partitionling and chromatography identified at least one major acidic component migrating at an Rf similar to that of GA3. It is concluded that the endogenous gibberellin-like substance(s) originates within the embryo during germination, and that the release of this substance('s) is temporally consistent with, and quantitatively sufficient to account for the in vivo endosperm mobilization response synldroIiie. A gilbberellin-Fke substance is uindotlubtedly the endospernm iinI)ilizinlr hormiionie.

Sugar Repression of a Gibberellin-Dependent Signaling Pathway in Barley Embryos.

Increasing evidence shows that sugars can act as signals affecting plant metabolism and development. Some of the effects of sugars on plant growth and development suggest an interaction of sugar signals with hormonal regulation. We investigated the effects of sugars on the induction of [alpha]-amylase by gibberellic acid in barley embryos and aleurone layers. Our results show that sugar and hor...

Aleurones from a Barley with Low [alpha]-Amylase Activity Become Highly Responsive to Gibberellin When Detached from the Starchy Endosperm.

The physiological and molecular bases for contrasting [alpha]-amylase phenotypes were examined in germinating seeds of two barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars, Morex and Steptoe. Morex is a high-quality malting barley that develops high [alpha]-amylase activity soon after germination. Steptoe is a feed barley that develops only low [alpha]-amylase activity levels during this period. The expre...

Physiological enhancement of medicinal pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo. var. styriaca) with different priming methods. Mohammad Sedghi1*, Bahman Amanpour-Balaneji2 and Javad Bakhshi3

In order to evaluate the effects of priming materials and duration of priming on the seed physiological enhancement and biochemical traits of germination in pumpkin seeds a factorial experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design with three replications at the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili. Treatments were priming with water, NaCl (3%), gibberellic acid (20 mg L-1), and asc...

Paleg L G. Physiological effects of gibberellic acid. I. On carbohydrate metabolism and amylase activity of barley endosperm. Plant Physiol. 35:293-9, 1960

"I am amazed and delighted to have authored a Citation Classic. Amazed because, somehow, it seemed so unlikely, but delighted for many reasons, not least because it was essentially my first major paper, the first of a number of papers following my move to Australia. I think of the work not only as a tribute to the opportunities and attitudes at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute of the U...

Evidence for "gibberellin-like" Substances from Flowering Plants.

Gibberellins are compounds that produce a wide variety of growth responses in flowering plants. Among these responses are stimulation of shoot growth for many plant species,' root elongation in maize,2 induction of bolting and flowering in some biennial and long-day plants,3-resumption of normal growth in certain genetically dwarfed genotypes of maize,6 growth stimulation in dwarf strains of pe...
